My French Coach Challenge: Day 1

my_french_coach_ss1.jpg

On a recent excursion to Toys ‘R’ Us, with a $25 gift card burning a hole in Elm’s pocket, I picked up on a complete impulse something that will hopefully expand my mind past mathematics and vision. My French Coach nasally proclaims itself to contain all that is required to conquer the language of romance, food, and dirty novels. I have taken it up on its offer and this evening have embarked on a journey to the undiscovered. Continue reading ‘My French Coach Challenge: Day 1′

Review: Assassin’s Creed Xbox 360

Review Banner

While we have been very busy over the last week, I still took the time out of my day to read a bit on the Assassin’s Creed reviews. While I will admit the game has a few bugs like the one pictured below, but it is nowhere near the terrible experience that most reviewers are giving it.

Assassin Bug

I haven’t finished Assassin’s Creed yet and I think I am far enough into it to say that we are pretty addicted to it. The storyline is intriguing and the mission are opening enough to allow me to do my own thing if I want to. So if beating up old man Jenkins isn’t your thing why not eavesdrop on someone’s conversation or pickpocket them for useful data.

Cities in Assassin’s Creed are open and beautifully detail to allow you to climb to every nook and cranny. You will notice a lot of the architecture of the buildings actually pops out from the structures so you can use it to climb around the town. Within all of these wall consist of a few extras or scavenger hunt objectives like capturing all of the flags for that district, slaying hidden Templar Knights, and getting to the high up view points to scope out the town.

Assassin’s Creed SS

Gameplay is very fluid and uses 2 controls schemes together to perform all of your actions. First you have the low profile moves such as gently pushing people away or blending into the crowds so the guards don’t become suspicious of you. Next you have you high profile actions sprinting, tackling and jumping which allow you to get out of a jam if you are spotted and control the crowd while escaping. Now I didn’t talk to much about the fighting just because it is a little different than you would expect since this is stealthy Altair, but but has got warrior moves. When I hear most of my friends reactions to stealth the first thing I always hear is “You have to hide and wait, since you can’t just run out and finish everybody”. While most of the time that is true, Altair is different. He can not only take on multiple enemies with a bunch of different weapons, but he also can take down a small army if you have the timing and skill to do so.

But as most of you know my big make or break for a game is music. Assassin’s Creed score is impressive and fits the time periods very well and best of all no Godsmack. While I do have to admit some of the voice acting is a little funny in the game but other than that fit in nicely to break up the story.

I highly recommend that you try it out. You may be surprised to find that this is a game worth you time.

Review - Canon PowerShot S5IS gets an A+

A couple months ago, Digigamer.net started a little category called Cooking with dGamer Style. It has a pathetic amount of posts since, for food, pictures are a necessity and my camera sucked. A few weeks ago, after convincing ourselves that a full piggy bank made us rich, Elmikey and I ran to the nearest Best Buy and picked up ::sings in operetta:: The Canon PowerShot S5IS.
This is my review.

Review: Shin Megami Tensei:Persona 3

Review Banner
Once in a great while, a truly different RPG comes along and really meets or totally blows away expectations. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is one of those titles mixing dating sim elements with dungeon crawling RPG.

Persona 3 Package

In Persona 3, you start off the game as the unnamed protagonist who is traveling to who dorm during the 25th hour of the day the Dark Hour. (In the scheme of all my RPG characters paying homage to Akira Kurosawa stars and movie titles, the protagonist is named Toshiro Mifune )The Dark Hour is an almost in between time where normal humans are transmogrified into coffins and Tartarus, or the Tower of Demise, appears where the shadows roam. Now here is where you come in. Users with potential, or the ability to use a persona, do not transmogrify but instead can explore the Dark Hour.

Review: Metroid Prime 3

Review Banner
While Metroid Prime 3 has been out for a couple of weeks and most of us are on our way to finishing it on Hyper Mode, we have to come out and say it first. Metroid Prime 3 is the best example of what an FPS or even a first person adventure game should be on the Wii.

Metroid Prime 3

Starting from the top, the control scheme for MP3 makes it one of the most immersive experience so far on the Wii. From having to aim for small weak points to the conventional controls of pulling out the levers or pressing the buttons on the elevator. I was a little worried at first that the controls would feel a bit sluggish; but, my fears were put to rest very quickly. I was running and gunning just like I would if this had been on a keyboard and mouse. It is easy to fall in love with this title just from picking up the Wiimote and moving thru the environments.

Metroid Prime 3

Speaking of environments the graphics aren’t too shabby themselves. With the addition of some bloom lighting and particle effects, it is easy to spot the differences between the Wii and Gamecube Metroid games. Not to ruin too much of the story, but just seeing some of the dark hallways of this universe light up from the blue glow of phazon is enough to make you walk back and forth saying, “Pinch me! Is this really coming from the Wii?”. I’m not trying to say that Wii games look bad. It is just there was that rocky start where third party titles weren’t even trying to use the extra horse power the Wii provides.

Metroid Prime 3

Sadly, we will end on the note of music and sound effects for Metroid. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t bad, but there is so much similarity between this title’s and previous Metroid title’s music. I guess isn’t a bad thing since it is a Metroid game and the familiar music brings back deep, down memories of playing Metroid and Super Metroid all night “back in the day”. This is a new title, for a next generation system, though. I needed a little more “Pizzazz!” in the music to match the leaps that the controls and graphics took, to burn another memory of what music was playing when I fought that awesome Ridley battle or even wandering through the lush environments. Overall, I still say that Metroid Prime 3 is one of the best reasons to have a Wii or reason to buy a Wii.

Game Radar Header

Well it is time for one of the most anticipated Xbox 360 games to makes its way to store shelves almost unchallenged. Once again if we didn’t cover a specific title it’s because we feel the game is too niche or not even worth mentioning, but if you still need guidance feel free to contact us

Review: Ninja Gaiden Sigma

Ninja Gaiden SigmaThis week saw the release of the newest version of Ninja Gaiden and this time it is for the Playstation 3. While I had a chance to play the demo at my Dad’s during Father’s Day, we do not have a PS3 ourselves yet so here is the review breakdown from Metacritic.

Gamespy - 100%

-A strong case can be made for Ninja Gaiden being the greatest action game ever made. This is easily one of the best games to play on your PlayStation 3.

IGN - 93%

-If you’ve never played Ninja Gaiden before, you should stand in line for this one.

1UP - 90%

-Even though genuinely new content doesn’t exactly abound, Sigma remains such a solid, expansive, challenging, and well-paced thrill ride that you truly won’t care.

Play Magazine - 85%

-Team Ninja oversold the sizzle, but this is still one hell of a steak. [July 2007, p.59]

GameDaily - 80%

-It is without question one of the most intense experiences on a console. However, its faults (poor design choices, really) keep it from being triple A.

Netflix On-Demand Rocks the Suburbs

Last night, I was power clicking my way through the recommended movies in my Netflix. Most of the time was spent wondering how a good review for Iron Giant could bring a recommendation for Patriot Games? The other part was spent thinking, Wow! I want to see that… right now! Especially when it came to So I Married an Axe Murderer, which I’d never seen.

In steps Netflix On-Demand. Hello, Ttoes. How are you? Guess what, download my player for Internet Explorer and you can watch So I Married an Axe Murderer right now!
Ok, I’ll do that. Five minutes later, Mike Myers was streaming across my screen.

Both of us here at DigiGamer were floored. It looked terrific, with only one glitch in the beginning. Sound is crystal clear and the picture had no artifacts, like the usual optimized into the ground streaming video has. The functions are all there - pause, rewind, fast-forward, volume control, full screen. I honestly thought that I had just popped in a DVD.

Each month, Netflix members get a certain amount of hours that they can use to watch movies on-demand. That amount of hours matches your monthy payment for Netflix services including taxes (i.e. a 3-movie $17.99 membership gets 18 hours of on-demand). The on-demand movies don’t affect your shipped movies in any way. It isn’t counted as one of your movies out, it’s basically a freebie. Check it out here.
At the moment, there isn’t an enormous selection, so start using it! I want a larger selection!

By the way, So I Married an Axe Murderer… LMFAO!

Review: Prince of Persia: Rival Swords

Before I state my opinion on Prince of Persia: Rival Swords, I started to think that maybe I had my expectations set too high for this port or maybe I didn’t. In theory you would think that they would have ported over the Gamecube version, but alas it feels much like a watered down PS2 version. But as they always say “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”, well this doesn’t apply to the play mechanics the controls seemed alright untill I started noticing how much my wrist was cramping up. As you can guess the camera is adjusted by twisting the wiimote from side to side and quickly became my main complaint. Now to give Prince of Persia some credit it did run rather smooth and when performing the acrobatics it didn’t quite seem so bad. Unfortunately I couldn’t overlook it’s shortcomings. /rant
