Games for the gaming Mom or how to convert your non-gaming Mom to love the battlefield

So Mother’s Day is this weekend and you want to go a little outside the norm of Flowers, Chocolates, Jewelery that uses annoying radio ads. Well look no further than some idea from yours truly. My mom, who just happens to be a gamer will be enjoying the fun of Apollo Justice this year. But here are some great ideas that I had if my mom wasn’t addicted to her new pink DS.

1. PopCap Games

Here is one that you can never go wrong with giving. PopCap games are like the gateway drug to the gaming world and with choices like Peggle, Zuma, and Bejeweled 2 you really can’t go wrong. Plus for Mother’s Day Popcap is donating 30% of your purchases to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for Breast Cancer. So you get the double feel good for the occasion.

2. XBox Live Points / Gametap

Yeah I know it is like giving you mom a gift card but the Xbox Live Arcade has some of the best classic games you mom would love to play again. While my mom knows her Xbox can go online it isn’t since she would need a really long ethernet cable so I can only recommend if A. It is online already or B. you are going to visit.

But now what if your mum doesn’t have a XBox 360 or is currently down with the RRoD. So go with a Gametap subscription gift and USB controller. Thier line up has a lot of great games like Sam and Max plus all your old favorites.

3. Nintendo DS / Touch Generation Titles

You really can’t go wrong with a Nintendo DS and any of the touch generation titles. Who doesn’t enjoy playing out Court Room drama in the Ace Attorney Series or solving brain teasers with Professor Layton.

4. iPod / mp3 Player

While this isn’t so much gaming related but you know your mom likes to rock out to her REO Speedwagon or Neil Diamond in peace. So why not an iPod or an mp3 Player! I think that the new low price on the iPod Shuffles make them a great gift for anyone. If you don’t care much for the Apple Flair you can always go with a Zune or an iRiver.

5.Wii Fit

Now this one is last for a good reason. First your Mom need to have a Wii and secondly you mom would also need or want to be active. But other than that the gift of helping you mom start getting in better shape is always a good gift. Plus little fitness add-on can keep the gifting ideas alive all year.

Well I hope this help out everyone with there last minute Mother’s Day preparations and let us know what you are thinking of giving your Mum for Mother’s Day.

New NIN Album

Nine Inch Nails - The Slip

While it is no surprise here that Trent Reznor and Co has once again one up-ed my expectations for online distrubtion of music. Today Nine Inch Nails release a new full length album titled The Slip for online consumption in multiple flavors for free. You can download directly from the page a high quality mp3 version, a FLAC lossless version, M4A lossless version and higher resolution 96k/24 bit uncompressed Wave version.

While yeah lots people have release music online for free or in a “name your own price” form. So you may be asking yourself what makes this so much different. First this one come completely free no strings attached but I’m sure that Nine Inch Nails would love it if you came out to a show. Second multiple formats make everyone happy, iPod owners and audiophile alike can rejoice in finally getting something they can both enjoy. Finally this is a great album that I could actually get up and shout about ! So allow me to get on that second time around and you get to downloading with the info below.

Note: The high resolution versions are being distributed via Bit Torrent.

Download it here.

Nintendo Updates the Photo Channel this December

Nintendo Updates the Photo Channel this December

There are some changes coming to the Photo Channel in December. First off mp3 is being dropped for AAC file compatibility which is nice consider most of my music is M4A and you will now be able to personalize your photo channel icon with pictures from your SD card. Not to drastic of a change but still a step in a better direction. Also if you are bummed that your music is still mp3 you can backup your CDs using  iTunes in AAC format.

Guitar Hero “Arcade Style” Cabinet

Guitar Hero “Arcade Style” Cabinet

Seeing this picture makes me wonder why we don’t have arcade version of Guitar Hero like Guitar Freaks. This has to be one of the coolest mods and the creator, Knievel from arcadecontrols.com states that he made this using real Marshall parts that he purchased online. The bottom cab actually hides the sub-woofer and the PS2 with the wireless guitar adapters, middle cab is a 27″ Toshiba CRT television, and the head has the two Left and right speakers from and a backlit Guitar Hero marquee.

osu! The Elite Beat Agent/Ouendan emulator

Now here is a new one that I didn’t expect to see, but with the success of rhythm games and making emulators like Stepmania  or Frets on Fire, this should almost be expected. osu!, which has just been release to an open beta is based on the gameplay of Elite Beat Agents and Ouendan and allows you to create beatmaps to your favorite songs that you wish made it into the game. This is an awesome idea and is almost making me consider getting a tablet pc just so I can try it out on that nice big screen and hopefully this works in Parallels for our Mac. System requirements below.

System Requirements:
Recommended 1ghz+ CPU (2ghz+ for smooth video)
Minimum 256mb RAM (512mb+ recommended)
DirectX9 and a graphics card that supports DirectX9 (64mb+ of video ram recommended)
.NET Framework 2.0
FFDShow or equivelant video codecs (only for video support)

Review: Shin Megami Tensei:Persona 3

Review Banner
Once in a great while, a truly different RPG comes along and really meets or totally blows away expectations. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is one of those titles mixing dating sim elements with dungeon crawling RPG.

Persona 3 Package

In Persona 3, you start off the game as the unnamed protagonist who is traveling to who dorm during the 25th hour of the day the Dark Hour. (In the scheme of all my RPG characters paying homage to Akira Kurosawa stars and movie titles, the protagonist is named Toshiro Mifune )The Dark Hour is an almost in between time where normal humans are transmogrified into coffins and Tartarus, or the Tower of Demise, appears where the shadows roam. Now here is where you come in. Users with potential, or the ability to use a persona, do not transmogrify but instead can explore the Dark Hour.

More iPod Mania

More iPod ManiaWell if a new iPod Nano was enough yesterday it looks like they also announce the iPod Touch, iPod Classic and a price drop for the iPhone. I have been on the fence for a bit on the whole iPhone thing and I still am just a bit, but this price drop certainly makes it a bit easier to handle. Check out your new choices for music players at Apple.

Guitar Hero III Hands On Wii Edition

Guitar Hero III Hands On Wii Edition
IGN got a chance to sit down and try out the latest edition of Guitar Hero for the Nintendo Wii. Here is a small bit of the write up from their hands on impressions.
What the Wii Remote/Guitar combo gets the game is, naturally, the inherent ability to be a wireless controller right out of the box since it’s essentially using all the wireless tech in the remote to talk with the Wii system. The motion detection for when you want to trigger the star power in-game (by lifting the controller) is now provided by the accelerometer within the Wii Remote. But this combo also adds a couple of features that won’t be in the other versions of Guitar Hero. First: rumble. The Wii version will be the only Guitar Hero game that will feature force-feedback thanks to the rumble in the controller, and believe it or not, in our hands-on, you really could feel the guitar shake to the beat when you rocked out with Star Power, as well as “buzz” when crazy effects are going on in the game.

Last.fm Is Currently Rocking My World… Wii Style

Music is a wonder of life. But much like the deliciousness of a Twizzler, when played with for too long it becomes stale and unenjoyable. I am left in cold silence as a result of my need for background noise. The television grates. My music - overused. My daughter without a tune to dance to. How sad.
In comes last.fm, an enormous online library of pretty much every band ever to come into existence. This online music library also has an online radio, which plays artists similar to the artist you have selected. I’m listening to the similar artist radio for L’Arc~en~Ciel. Saints be praised! Music, sweet, sweet music!
Now here is where this becomes… phenomenal. I’m listening to last.fm streaming over the Nintendo Wii’s Internet Channel. With my surround sound hookup, I now have last.fm’s lineup of my already favorite and new music sliding through the room.

Upsides!

  • Your own profile with a dashboard for collecting tracks that you enjoy.
  • Tag a track so you can organize the tracks that you like and pull them up instantly by calling forth a tag you place. (similar to a keyword) Other people’s tags can be used to pull up music, too.
  • Browse other peoples playlists and tags.
  • Get a biography of the artist and an album list with cover art.
  • Listen to the radio with only that artist playing OR listen to the similar artist radio which still plays your artist.
  • Show love for a song you like. Block the songs that you hate.
  • Search for your artist then get a list of hundreds of other artist like them. This is how I’ve rediscovered all my gothic artists that I had lost in the wind. Concrete Blonde, Razed in Black, The Cruxshadows… I’ve found you again! ::whimper::
  • Widgets. Notice the sexy widget on the top right of this page with album covers? Yeah, that’s Elm’s showing off what he’s listened to.

There is one downside that I’m having, not a biggie but the tracks can change in volume from one to the other.
