Yesterday, I had the opportunity to sit back and put a couple of hours on the new Sonic and the Secret Rings for Wii. The first thing that made this a hit for me is that it has 16X9 support and 480P which makes a word of difference for us HDTV owners. Making Sonics journey in the world of Arabian Nights a very pleasant one with beautiful environments and graphic novel like story presentation.
The controls on Sonic and the Secret Rings has a few minute learning curve that is only dragged out by the tutorials that help you understand the controls. All of your actions are done with only the Wiimote that range from, tilting the controller to move from side to side or walking backwards and thrusting forward after jumping to smash into your enemies. My only complaint is that there is no sensitivity adjustment for the Wiimote to make turning to avoid a jar a bit easier.
Voice overs are quite possibly my number one complaint on most games titles and Sonic and the Secret Rings is no exception. The voice actors/artresses have there parts down it just feels a bit like watching an episode of Dora with my daughter on there execution and enthusiasm. Also there need to be a custom soundtrack ability, like in Excite Trunk because the music in game is the typical music styles that you expect sometimes from a the Sonic franchise. Other times it is almost an 80s Heavy Metal reminiscent of the Scorpions(only an example).
Expect a full review this weekend!

Phil Harrison, Sony’s President of Worldwide Studios, states that the reason isn’t a lawsuit but that the feature is so last generation. But Phil,we still miss the rumble!
“I believe that the Sixaxis controller offers game designers and developers far more opportunity for future innovation than rumble ever did. Now, rumble I think was the last generation feature; it’s not the next-generation feature. I think motion sensitivity is. And we don’t see the need to do that. Having said that, there will be specific game function controllers, potentially like steering wheels that do include vibration or feedback function — not from us but from third parties.”
Here is the list of titles availible this week on the Virtual Console.
